The Bible's Bucket List

Let go of pride before it destroys you

Live Humbly
The Fall

Scripture Reading: Proverbs 16:16-20

Key Verse: Proverbs 16:18
Pride goes before destruction,
a haughty spirit before a fall.

Pride always leads to a fall. If you have been around the church for any length of time, you have likely heard someone say, “Pride goes before a fall.” Today’s Key Verse is the scripture on which this saying is based.

The pressing question is: What does this “fall” look like? Would we even recognize it when it occurs? The truth is that many times we do not realize that our pride has led us into trouble. Too often, people fail to connect the dots! When hardships arise, we frequently blame others, the poor economy, or circumstances beyond our control. Yet sometimes, though certainly not always, it is our prideful attitude that causes our problems.

When we fail to humbly seek God’s wisdom in managing our finances, pride can lead to financial difficulties. Neglecting to consult Him about our spending suggests that we believe we can handle things independently. This reflects a prideful approach to financial management.

A fall may also manifest in our relationships. Could it be that you struggle to get along with someone because you are not adopting Jesus’s humble attitude and speaking graciously to them?

Pride often leads to destructive events in our lives, and wisdom requires us to recognize and resist it.

Father, I need Your Holy Spirit to examine me — pointing out any haughty spirit that might slip into my attitudes. Please help me walk humbly and dependently before You today. In Jesus’s Name, amen.
