Trust God’s Opinion
Set Your Heart and Mind
Scripture Reading: Colossians 3:5-17
Key Verses: Colossians 3:1-3
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
It’s my opinion that today we reach the peak of being used of God. The apostle teaches us to set our affections and our thought life on spiritual matters. To set an object on a table is an intentional act accomplished by our free will. Our scripture for today is describing an intentional act, accomplished by each of us … a choice of our free will! Yes, God will help us, but this is an act for each of us to do.
First, we must set our affections on spiritual and eternal matters. Our love and passions must be intentionally directed away from the “immediate and temporal” to the “divine and eternal.” In other words, I choose to seek God’s values and make them my own! I diligently read His Word; I consistently worship with other believers; I faithfully converse with my Father in Heaven – all to gain a better understanding of where to “set my heart.” We make daily choices to love what God loves and hate what God hates!
Secondly, we must set our mind on spiritual and eternal matters. Our wandering mind must be bridled and brought under control. When we catch ourselves thinking thoughts that are worldly and/or dishonoring to Christ, we must immediately put these thoughts out of our mind. Paul put it this way: “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed … ” (Colossians 3:5). The Holy spirit in us will help us, but we must give ourselves to this never ending task of “walking worthy of the Lord” (Colossians 1:10).
Father, I pledge my best efforts and energies today to honoring you with my heart and my mind! I’m your ‘living sacrifice’ for service. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
