Fear of Falling From God
Adding to My Faith – Part 3

Scripture Reading: 2 Peter 1:4-7

Key Verse: 2 Peter 1:3

His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

Once again, the next addition to our faith that Peter lists, needs the original language to help us truly understand it.  “Godliness,” in Greek, literally means “reverence and respect” toward God.  This is what Peter wanted those early believers to add to their faith: daily respect for a holy God!  What does it mean to respect someone?  Wouldn’t we treat their words and wishes carefully?  If I truly respect you, I naturally take your wisdom seriously!  Make sure godliness is part of your journey with the Lord.

The Apostle Peter adds “brotherly kindness” to the list of things we must add to our faith in Jesus.  He wants us to think relationally, as Jesus consistently taught.  Loving God and loving those around us is central to true faith.  Brotherly kindness speaks of kindness that is always appropriate and sincere; no ulterior motives.  Kindness to others is a positive command and gets us beyond just worrying about things we shouldn’t do as Christ followers!

Finally, Peter wraps up this discussion with the virtue that covers over everything: Add love to your faith in Jesus.  If we simply ask ourselves, “Is what I’m about to say or do a loving act?” then we will grow our loving ways.  Our human nature tends to be careless.  We must be slow to speak in order to grow our loving ways!

Father, I will continually add to my faith in you: words and actions that represent you well.  In Jesus’s name, amen.
