Trust is tested when life seems to go against us

A Sign of Trust
Trust Test – Part 1

Scripture Reading: Mark 4:35-41

Key Verse: Mark 4:40

He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

I’ve never been in a boat while a terrible storm was rocking it. It is not hard to imagine how scary that would be. In our scripture passage for today, we read that the disciples were in a boat and thought for sure that they were going to drown. They fought to keep going but finally gave up and ran to Jesus; He was asleep in the stern. The disciples did the right thing when they ran to Jesus; however, they said the wrong thing when they woke Him up! In Mark 4:38 we read their words: “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” They questioned Jesus’ love and concern for them!

I don’t think we should judge these disciples too harshly—most of us have been there and done that! When life gets really tough—everything seems to be going against us—it’s easy to question God’s love and concern for us. It’s not hard to trust God when life is flowing along smoothly; our trust is tested when life seems to go against us.

The disciples ran to Jesus, and so should we, when the storms of life hit. The disciples would have passed the trust test had they said to Jesus, “The storm is scary, but as long as we can be down here with you, all is well.” Picture the disciples lying down beside Jesus, resting with Him, while the storm continued to rock the boat. That would have been a picture of true trust! Do you need to lay down beside Jesus and rest? (Continued)

Father, I’m going to simply rest in you. I know you can and will calm the storm when it’s time. In Jesus’ name, amen.
