Maturity Matters

Daily prayers and Bible study show we know our need to be strong in the Lord

Mature Thinking
Thoughts About the Tempter – Part 2

Scripture Reading: 1 Peter 5:5-11

Key Verse: 1 Peter 5:8

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

The Apostle Peter, with the help of the Holy Spirit, paints a picture of the devil. This is important because the devil never really looks like what our world thinks he does! We are not going to see someone coming at us with horns and a pitchfork!

The Bible describes the evil one in three ways. First, we see the devil depicted as a serpent. This lying serpent comes to confuse us with half truths, appealing to our cravings.

A second description given in God’s Word: The evil one is an angel of light. At times he comes to us with false views on spiritual things, wanting us to presume upon God. In his deceitful way he comes to us twisting God’s Word just enough to get us off the narrow way—if we let him.

Finally, the Bible describes our enemy as a roaring lion. What a clear visual as we think about how a lion stalks his prey, pouncing at just the right time. As Peter paints this picture of a lion who wants to bear down on us and destroy us, we understand the words: Stay alert!

Christ followers must respect this enemy or we won’t be ready to fight back when he attacks. What does this respect look like? Daily prayers and Bible study show that we understand our need to be strong in the Lord. Don’t get distracted or lazy; the devil is prowling around you!

Father, grant me strength and wisdom against the devil as I do my best in preparation. In Jesus’ name, amen.
