Thinking Right When Things Go Wrong

If I pray for and try to bless those who hurt me, God steps in and takes up my defense

Things Gone Wrong Can Be Good
Be Devoted

Scripture Reading: Romans 12:14-21

Key Verse: Romans 12:10
Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.

Many times, it seems that people around us cause “things gone wrong”. People say things or do things that frustrate us, cause us inconvenience, and, at times, sleepless nights. Can there be any good in all that messy relational junk?

Let’s turn to today’s Scripture Reading. The Apostle Paul tells us to be “devoted to one another in brotherly love.” Later in today’s Scripture Reading, Paul challenges us to “bless those who persecute” us. Then Paul wraps up the chapter by giving us the secret of it all: Leave room for God to “repay” those who would hurt us!

Relational conflict does, indeed, have good behind it, but we must leave room for God to work during it.

If I take revenge on someone — verbally or otherwise — then I have eliminated room for God to work. If I pray for those who hurt me, and try to bless them, God steps in and takes up my defense. He can do far more for me than I can do for myself!

The next time you find yourself in a relational battle, remember to say (force yourself if necessary): “This can be good if I leave room for God!” That attitude can keep your anger down and your ears open; both of which open the door to good communication!

Relational problems can be good. Ask God to open your eyes to see it!

Father, it is so hard to see anything good behind my pain. Please help me lean heavily on You today. In Jesus’s Name, amen.
