Living Lukewarm
Becoming Spittle – Part 1
Scripture Reading: Matthew 7:20-29
Key Verse: Revelation 3:16
But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!
It’s a graphic picture, “I will spit you out of my mouth!” Why did Jesus make this harsh statement to the church in Laodicea? He demanded repentance from the other six churches in Revelation chapter two and three, but nothing this harsh. The lukewarm spiritual condition is so nauseous to God, so grievous, that He simply can’t stand it to be a part of His kingdom in any way.
Someone wrote that lukewarm Christians have too much of the world in them to truly enjoy Jesus and too much of Jesus in them to truly enjoy the world; they are miserable people! God will not live with this spiritual condition in His church. He will spit them out of His mouth if they do not seek a hot relationship with Him.
It’s a terrible graphic to have in our minds; I could become God’s spittle. However, if it is possible, it is a necessary truth to teach. It is not loving or kind not to tell an unsuspecting person of an impending danger that we may see. The Bible does not seek to make us all feel good and comfortable. The Bible has been preserved by God Himself for every generation to have truth that “teaches, rebukes, corrects, and trains us to do right” (2 Timothy 3:16). Don’t become God’s spittle; turn up the heat in your spiritual life and determine to “seek the kingdom of God above all else” (Matthew 6:33).
Father, I open my heart and mind to your Spirit’s correction and rebuke when I grow lazy in my walk with you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
