Your Purse

Scripture Reading: Luke 12:35-40

Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.

The word purse, in our scripture for today, is referring to the money we accumulate in this world. Obviously, men in our culture—by and large—don’t carry purses. Jesus’ point is simply, purchase a purse of God. In other words, act in a way that accumulates eternal “money,” the kind you can take with you! Jesus explains how: Be generous with the less fortunate around you! This is such a huge part of Kingdom values that Jesus said: “Sell your possessions” if necessary, to be generous!

There are scriptures that teach us that God does not demand all of us to own nothing. Nor does God ask us to give everything we own away to the needy! There was only one man on record that came to Jesus and was asked to sell all he had and follow Jesus! It is my opinion that Jesus asked that of him because Jesus could see his heart and understood how “out of balance” he was in this area.

Don’t miss the point of Luke 12:33: Jesus is teaching generosity, not “socialism.” Jesus knew what a stumbling block money can be to us. His heart for us caused him to show us a better way to live, especially in this area of material possessions. Keep a loose grip on your things, on your money! Allow God, the Holy Spirit, to direct you, nudge you, open your eyes to someone He will pick out for you to be generous to. As we obey those nudges, we automatically put our deposit on a brand new
”purse” that will never wear away.

Father, I want to accumulate your ‘money,’ your ‘purse’ for me. Grant me wisdom as I choose who to bless today with the blessings you’ve shared with me! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
