The Sinful Nature – Part 2
Scripture Reading: Romans 8:5-14
Key Verse: Romans 8:5
Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
The book of Romans is one of the Bible’s best books when it comes to solid theology. A laymen’s definition of the word theology: “How we are to relate to God in our daily lifestyles.” In other words, theology is the policy manual given to us so we can honor God in our lives. The eighth chapter of Romans is a great chapter to read if we want to understand the sinful nature. This chapter lays it out clearly. Let’s look at several aspects.
First, we can know that we are living according to our sinful nature if we are consistently thinking how to please that nature. It’s the opposite for those who want to live according to God’s Spirit. These individuals are continually thinking of ways to please God, not their sinful desires. We may not be successful all the time, but the desire to please God is first priority!
Secondly, the mind controlled by the sinful nature is death. If someone determines to live their life chasing every desire of their flesh, they die; both now and in eternity. They die now because their life will be unfulfilling and empty. That is what such selfishness does to a person! The apostle writes that the opposite happens to one who determines to follow God’s Spirit. They find life and peace!
Finally, a life controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. Let’s be clear. No matter what we say we believe, our lifestyle speaks the real truth of who or what controls our lives!
Father, with your help and the Holy Spirit’s reminders, I will honor you with my words and behavior today! I want my sinful nature to be ‘voted off the island.’ In Jesus’ Name, amen.
