I Know I Couldn’t Ignore the Savior
Centurions Pointed to Him
Scripture Reading: Matthew 28:11-15
Key Verse: Matthew 27:54
When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”
Throughout the story of Jesus’ life here on earth, the Roman government, with its military, had ruled the Holy Land. The Romans who worked for the government lived among the Jewish people, at least nearby. Reading through the New Testament we get a sense that the Romans could care less about all the Jewish rituals or faith. The Romans simply wanted the land to live in peace under their rule. Jesus was a growing nuisance to them, causing unrest among the locals. There had been other zealots and the Romans dealt quickly to eliminate their “disobedience” to the law of the land.
Jesus was different. The Romans that had any contact with Him couldn’t shake off His influence. Pilate tried to wash his hands of Him and the centurions tried to mock their way out of being affected by His powerful life, but in the end, they couldn’t ignore Him. Our key verse writes of the centurion who watched Jesus die; he proclaimed Jesus as the Son of God. Our additional reading section tells of other soldiers who had to be paid off, so they would lie about what their eyes had seen!
If you have co-workers, or even family members, who are far from God, don’t think they can ignore Jesus. They will try as the most hardened hearts have tried, but Jesus won’t be ignored.
Father, I rest in the knowledge that this world and every single living soul will be confronted by the truth about you. May Jesus be Lord of their lives. In Jesus Name, amen.
