Drawing Power – Part 1
Scripture Reading: John 6:39-46
Key Verse: John 6:44
“For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up.”
The Bible is clear that God does not want anyone lost eternally. It is God’s will that every single person believe in Jesus, ask for forgiveness, and spend eternity in heaven (2 Peter 3:9).
By God’s own determination, our will can trump God’s will when it comes to our salvation. We must choose to follow Jesus—God’s will for our salvation will not override our will in this area.
God works in our world to accomplish His will of winning souls to Himself. God’s Holy Spirit is active in people’s lives, drawing them to Jesus. Just like the wise men followed the star and found Jesus, so God provides a “star” for all of us to follow. Our star will look different, but has the same purpose in guiding us to Jesus. Jesus made it clear, in our printed key verse for today, that no one can come to Jesus unless God the Father draws them. God is faithful to draw people to Himself. Each person is responsible to respond to God’s wooing in their life. If they follow that inner wooing in their hearts, they will find Jesus!
Theologians have entitled this wooing of God, prevenient grace. Grace is defined as “unmerited favor of God.” Prevenient refers to work in us before we accept Jesus as our Savior. Though we don’t earn it, God has determined to show favor to all people, giving them His grace to help them find eternal life. We are ultimately responsible to receive it, but God helps us.
Father, I praise You for Your faithful work in my life to help me live for You. In Jesus’s name, amen.
