Things Gone Wrong Can Be Testing
Test of Delays

Scripture Reading: Genesis 17:1-6

By faith Abraham, even though he was past age — and Sarah herself was barren — was enabled to become a father because he considered him faithful who had made the promise.

One of the most subtle tests we face is what I call the “test of delays.” This kind of test, when God allows, concern the promises of God’s Word that seem slow in coming.

We humans often interpret a last-minute move on God’s part as “God coming through in the nick of time.” The truth is, God came through in His divine time and that is always perfect!

An example most parents have experienced is when we did not tell our young children about an upcoming special fun event. We knew telling them too early would create chaos in our homes because kids often struggle with time lapse issues. When the day came and we announced to our kids the fun event, they undoubtedly thought it was “last minute, just in the nick of time.” The truth is that we — as parents — had been planning it all along!

Abraham and Sarah struggled at their “test of delays.” God told them of the coming promise of a child and many descendants, but to Abraham and Sarah the promise seemed too long in coming. Their challenge was to continue to believe and trust, without real evidence that would help them in this test.

We all, eventually, go through a “test of delays.” It feels like God has forgotten us. The evil one whispers doubts and fears into our ears! To pass this test, we must resist the devil and rejoice in God’s faithfulness. We must cling to God’s holy character and eternal Word — and wait!

Father, patiently waiting without whining is not easy. Please help me to praise You even when I feel like pouting. In Jesus’s Name, amen.
