Grow Yourself Up
Be Still
Scripture Reading: Psalm 46:1-11
Key Verse: Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”
One of the secrets to self growth in our spiritual lives is learning to slow life down. In our society especially, we are on the run; very mobile in all we do. We run to the store after we have run the kids to their activities, which was right after we ran to the doctor’s office to get their sports check up. After we have filled our days with running, we fall asleep in front of the television in sheer exhaustion. We cannot grow ourselves up in the holy faith while living a frantic lifestyle.
The Psalms teach us to “be still!” Slow life down for a time each day. We must develop a quiet time for ourselves with our God and Savior Jesus Christ. David wrote in our printed key verse: “Be still and know that I am God.” Please note a couple of truths from this verse. First, it is a command of God. He is the one doing the talking; David is only transcribing. God is telling us to “be still.”
Secondly, to really get the second part, “and know that I am God,” is more than intellectual knowledge. This verse is referring to those quiet moments when you look heavenward and realize there is a God who is still in control. God wants us to have intimate knowledge of Him and experience the peace that comes from that knowledge. These quiet moments are to exalt His name in our lives. David concludes this Psalm with a powerful reminder: “The Lord Almighty is with us” (Psalm 46:11). Take that thought with you today!
Father, as I quiet myself before you, I praise you for being ever present and powerful. I am filled with hope and peace, knowing you are with me! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
