Three Stumbling Blocks

God’s power is surrounded by a spirit of love and self-discipline; it is a power under God’s control

Power Under Control

Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 1:3-10

Key Verse: 2 Timothy 1:7

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

The apostle Paul taught about God’s power a lot! In our scripture today, he is instructing young Timothy on God’s power. Paul is trying to fill his young apprentice with confidence, a holy boldness to accomplish great things for God! The apostle reminded Timothy that it wasn’t God’s intention for him to walk in timidity, fearful of people or circumstances. It was God’s will for His children to receive and live out power.

As you go about your day, God wants you to have an attitude, a confidence, a boldness in your inner spirit. This is not a prideful self-reliance, but rather a deep faith in the gift that God has given you. If you are His child, God has given you a spirit of power. This power is surrounded by a spirit of love and self-discipline. In other words, it is a power under God’s control.

Jesus said He came to give us life abundant. How can we enjoy life abundant if we are walking around intimidated, timid and fearful! God doesn’t want that for you. He wants you to face each day with a deep confidence that you can live victoriously, trusting His power working in you. The apostle Paul was convinced that he could do all things, not in and of himself, but through Christ and His power in him (Philippians 4:13).

Father, give me balance today to walk confidently and boldly, yet in total reliance on your power in me. In Jesus’ Name I ask this, amen.
