To Seek Him
Scripture Reading: Acts 17:24-28
Key Verse: Acts 17:27
God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.
The Apostle Paul was visiting Athens and was disturbed that it was a city full of idols. So he went out into the marketplace every day speaking to those who happened to be there. One day a group of philosophers was there and heard Paul’s message about Jesus. They invited Paul to speak at their council of philosophers that met in that city.
The apostle’s message to these pagan philosophers relates to our topic this week. Paul told them that God worked through His creation so that “men would seek Him and perhaps reach out to Him and find Him.” This gives us the confidence to believe that God uses not only our efforts to reach people far from God, but His very creation to invite people to seek Him. If anyone truly is seeking God, they will find Him.
In later verses of Acts 17 we are told that a few people became followers of Christ after Paul’s sermon. That tells me that most of these philosophers were not really seeking truth; they simply enjoyed the discussion and debate. However, a few were really seekers of truth and they found what their hearts longed for: The Christ!
The entry point into the kingdom of God is authentic seeking of truth. Those that pursue peace will soon find the Prince of Peace.
Father, give me courage to testify of you in my life. Help those that listen to long for you in their life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
