Putting love into action is a normal response to God’s gift of salvation

The Most Practical Way
Please God – Part 2

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 13:15-21

Key Verse: Hebrews 13:16

And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Yesterday’s devotional distinguished the difference between wanting to please God and actually pleasing God, which boils down to action.  God sees our desire to but is pleased when we actually make our intentions into doing!  The Bible is clear: this action does not buy our way into heaven.  Putting our love into action is a normal response to God’s gift of salvation.

We also read yesterday how the early church shared their material possessions with others in need.  God wants us to do the same but not without prayerful thought!  We live in a society where we must be wise.  We are called to be good managers of our resources, not enablers of other’s poor choices.  However, we must not use that as an excuse to never help others.  Most needy people do have need of more wisdom in handling their money—most, not all!  We need to help them in ways that encourage them to grow in wisdom and responsibility.  I don’t believe writing a check is the best answer in many situations, even if it is the easiest way.  Helping people—truly helping them—will probably demand some time and involvement in their lives.

Why get involved with these messy situations?  There is only one good answer: “for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”

Father, please remind me to open my eyes and heart to the person you want me to do good for and share with today!  In Jesus’ name, amen.
