Thanksgiving for the Kingdom of God
Proper Rejoicing for the Kingdom – Part IV
Scripture Reading: Luke 10:17-20
Key Verse: Luke 10:20
“However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
When Jesus said to His followers, “Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven…” (Matthew 5:12a), His followers could not appreciate how great the reward would be. Nobody can truly understand all that God will give to us when we finish this life being faithful to God.
The Apostle Paul confirms this truth:
However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”— the things God has prepared for those who love him. (1 Corinthians 2:9)
Even though we really cannot comprehend all that Jesus has prepared for us, we can trust His power and His love for us. We can rest assured that all Jesus has prepared for us will be fantastic beyond words.
From the Apostle John’s Revelation about the end of time, we learn about heaven:
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.
I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among His people! He will live with them, and they will be His people. God Himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” (Revelation 21: 1-4 NLT)
Since sin has wrecked God’s first creation, He will create a new heaven and a new earth. Christ-followers will spend eternity on this new earth. We cannot know exactly what our life will be like on this new earth, but we can imagine.
I imagine an unspoiled earth with luscious green fields and perfect gardens of flowers and fruits of all kinds. We will live there without any doubts, fears, or temptations to do evil or even think about evil. We will love everyone with perfect love, much like the love God has for all of us now.
Jesus was right, our greatest joy should be that God has written our names in Heaven!
Father, I praise You for Your plan of salvation and for writing down my name in Heaven. You are a good, good Father! In Jesus’s Name I pray, amen.
