It’s amazing that Jesus’s teachings are still as relevant today as they ever were!

Foolish Free Living
Put into Practice – Part VI

Scripture Reading: Matthew 7:24-29

Key Verse: Matthew 7:24

“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.

Continuing from yesterday’s devotional, we know a second reason people were amazed was because Jesus spoke with authority. This is made clear in verse 29, which adds, “not as their teachers of the law.” This was another sign of who Jesus was. Their teachers were “reporters” of the truth; Jesus was the truth! Their teachers spoke about the Word, Jesus was the Word (John 1:1). Their teachers pointed to the Light of the World, Jesus was the Light of the world (John 1:4). Their teachers talked about the ways of God, Jesus was the Way (John 14:6).

Are you amazed at Jesus’ teachings because you believe Jesus is the authority over all other teachings of this world? No matter how you or I answer that question, it is our lifestyle that gives the true answer about us. If we are careful to read, study and live out the teachings of Jesus, then it is obvious that we see Jesus as the authority. The Bible makes a claim that no other sacred writing claims. It claims it to be the very Word of God. Read what the Bible says of itself: “All scripture is given by the inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instructions in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). Note the word, “all”—not some or a few of stories in the Bible—all of it is inspired. God has preserved the Bible over the many years of its existence. Men have tried to burn it, outlaw it and kill people who translated it into languages so others could read it. Yet, the Bible is still the most published book in the world! That fact alone ought to convince us of its authority.

Yes, the people were amazed at the way Jesus taught and so should we be. Be amazed that Jesus’ teachings are still relevant!

Father, I will read my Bible with an open heart and mind, in order to hear your voice and go live it out. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
