God knows when the best time is to share our faith with someone

Myths about Missionaries
I Should Always Talk About Jesus

Scripture Reading:  Ephesians 5:15-17

Key Verse: Colossians 4:5

Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.

Today’s myth refers to those who feel that if they are not talking about Jesus they are not good witnesses.  The truth is: we can hurt the kingdom with unwise talk.  Jesus Himself said not to throw our pearls before the swine or give to a dog that which is sacred (Matthew 7:6).  In other words, we must be careful not to talk “churchie talk” to those outside the church lest they simply make fun of it.

I think most of us have met over-enthusiastic Christ followers who are indiscriminately pushing Jesus on everyone they meet.  The Apostle Paul, in our printed key verse for today, speaks of being wise in the way we act toward outsiders and looking for opportunities.  Here is the key: looking for opportunities.  God knows when the best time is to share our faith with someone.  We must be wise and discerning followers to see those opportunities.  God provides them; we are to walk through them.  We are to be obedient and courageous to talk about our faith when God opens the door for the perfect moment with someone.

Our job is to “make the most of every opportunity,” according to the apostle.  This takes a prayerful attitude on our part.  Let’s determine to include in our daily prayer these moments of opportunity, asking God for wisdom and courage.  God uses everyone to shine in this dark world.

Father, I want to be used of you today.  Open my eyes to the opportunities.  Grant me the wisdom and the courage to take those opportunities.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
