Rejoicing in Suffering – Part 1
Scripture Reading: Romans 5:1-5
Key Verse: Romans 5:3
Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance
If you were able to read the five verses suggested for today’s devotional, I think it would prove “attitude is everything”! The Apostle Paul wrote that he could rejoice in suffering—now that is a positive attitude! Have you met anyone who rejoiced when they were suffering? Do you rejoice when you suffer? I find it very difficult to find that kind of positive attitude when I am in pain. Let’s study this section of scripture to find the secret of such an attitude.
I believe it starts with the facts in the first verse: We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1). This is the foundation that is a must to build the balance of our lives on. If we are certain we have peace with God, then we can face the troubles and pains in life knowing that God is not mad at us. Our relationship with God is settled when we accept Jesus as our Savior. We have peace with God because of our faith in Jesus. Troubles in life are not there to punish us; Jesus took our punishment upon Himself.
Secondly, we can know that any suffering that comes our way is saturated with purpose. God doesn’t cause all of life’s troubles, but he puts purpose in it all. God’s purposes for us are always for our good! (Continued)
Father, I am full of gratitude for the peace I have with you through Jesus. I will rejoice and be glad! In Jesus’ name, amen.
