Living Lukewarm
Becoming Spittle – Part 2
Scripture Reading: Matthew 7:20-29
Key Verse: Revelation 3:16
But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!
Someone will ask, “Does this mean that these Laodicean Christians will be eternally lost?” Unless there is repentance, God cannot allow His children to live lukewarm. You should note that in the next verse, God’s opinion was that these church folks were not rich, as they felt they were, but poor; they were, in God’s opinion, wretched, pitiful, blind, and naked. God is calling them back to the relationship they once had when they first believed. However, if they refuse to repent, they will be vomited from God’s mouth and eternally lost.
Jesus warned His followers in John 15 that God cuts off any branch that does not bear fruit and prunes those that do bear fruit. He goes on to warn, in this same chapter, that anyone who does not “remain” in Him will be like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. These strong words of Jesus should help us understand we have a part to play in our salvation. We don’t earn it, but we must respond to it daily. We must put to death the activities of our sinful nature (Colossians 3:5).
The good news is: God always warns and patiently allows His children to respond to His rebukes. We must listen to the inner voice of God’s Holy Spirit and repent.
Father, I don’t want to be lukewarm, teach me to live hot for you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
