Knowing God - March 2018

God fills the universe in all its parts and is present everywhere at once

I AM
His Name

Scripture Reading: Exodus 3:11-15

Key Verse: Exodus 3:13-14

Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”
God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ “

I am sure, at first, Moses found it an odd name. Moses felt that if he were going to have credibility with the Israeli leaders, he needed to know the name of the God he said he had heard from! The voice of God thundered: Tell them, “I am who I am.” In the Hebrew text of the Old Testament, we are only given four consonants; four letters for this name. The vowels were never written or spoken out of profound reverence for the name of God. These four letters, YHWH, were used 6,800 times in the Hebrew text. The Jewish leaders, in the third century before Christ, pronounced them in Greek as Yahweh. Six centuries after Christ, the title of Jehovah began to appear in the Masoretic text, which is used in translating most Protestant Bibles. To get the true meaning translated into English, it takes: “I am who I am” to get clarity.

In our suggested additional reading, we read God’s proclamation: “This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation” (Exodus 3:15). We are to never forget His name. It is a title with great meaning as we’ll see in the next few devotionals. For today, bring that name to every need or problem of your life: He is the great “I AM!”

“Father, today when I start to weaken in my faith, remind me that you are everything I could ever need. I worship you as the great I AM. In Jesus’ Name, amen.”
