The Missionary
Light
Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:15-20
Key Verse: Matthew 5:14
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.
In Jesus’ first and longest sermon He painted the picture of what a follower of His looks like. In yesterday’s devotional we studied that a follower is like “salt.” Jesus pushed it further by using another illustration. He said we are to be “light.” Jesus said this of Himself as well in John 8:12 – “When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.’” It makes sense that Jesus would want us to be reflectors of His light by being light to those around us who are in darkness.
Our mission can only be accomplished by having Jesus in the center of our lives. As missionaries we are only effective when we are shining the light that has been given to us. If you believe that Jesus could be an effective witness to your family and friends, then you can have the confidence that you can be effective as well! The light in us as His followers does the work! It is the resource needed for people lost in darkness. Our mission is to be ourselves “in Christ.” As we live our lives in Him, we will shine bright and be what is needed for those around us. As missionaries we simply remain in Him and we will be fruitful! (John 15:5). Missionaries are light to the world as we stay in step with our leader!
Father, I want to complete the mission you have given me. I will remain in you and walk through this day as the Spirit leads me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
