How to be Led by God

Fear has a way of painting the worst-case scenario in all the decisions of our lives

Don’t be Afraid
Finding Strength

Scripture: 1 Samuel 23:16-17a

And Saul’s son Jonathan went to David at Horesh and helped him find strength in God. “Don’t be afraid,” he said.

I love this passage of scripture. It includes powerful elements for our spiritual journey. Saul had turned on David with a vengeance – determined to kill him. Saul’s son, Jonathan, loved David and was just as determined to keep David safe. God had picked David to be king but David, I’m sure, wondered how it would ever happen amid all the turmoil.

Just a few verses before our passage for today, David had asked God His opinion about a serious threat to David’s life. God answered David’s inquiry by sending Jonathan to be with him. This verse should be the motto of all spiritual mentors: “Jonathan went to David… and helped him find strength in God.”

Fear can paralyze us all if we let it. Fear has a way of painting the worst-case scenario in all the decisions of our lives. The Bible attacks fear from all angles. It is constantly reminding us – Don’t be afraid. God knows how devastating fear is, especially when we are trying to make decisions. Fear can keep us stuck in a bad circumstance because we’re so fearful of making things worse. Many people stay in horrible conditions at home and at work, simply because they are so fearful of the unknown alternatives. God comes to us – wanting to guide us out of these joy-robbing situations. He has better plans for us… plans for our good, but fear can keep us from receiving God’s “Plan A” for our lives! Can I be a Jonathan to you? Find your strength in God – no need for fear!

Father, I surrender my fears at your feet. I choose to trust in your strength and power for me. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
