Refreshed by God's Love

Jesus loves you despite your unworthiness, so overlook the faults of people

Rooted and Established – Part V

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 3:14-21

Key Verse: Ephesians 3:17
And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love…

In yesterday’s devotional, we started to study the two types of love that the New Testament describes.

We looked at the first kind of love, which was our love for God. Biblically, this kind of love is our obedience to the commands that Jesus taught.

Today, let’s look at the second kind of love in the New Testament: our love for other people. The New Testament emphasizes over and over that God commands us to love one another. Jesus said that our love for others is evidence of our faith in Him:

Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples. (John 13:35 NLT)

It is no wonder the Apostle Paul prayed that God’s people would be “rooted and established in love!”

Most of us believers struggle with understanding the love that the Bible describes. Read these statements by Jesus concerning the love we must strive for in our lives:

This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:12-13 NLT)

All of us could probably come up with examples of what Jesus describes in these two verses.

One way we can love others like Jesus loves us is by not judging a person’s worthiness of our love. Jesus loved us despite our unworthiness, so we must overlook the faults of people around us and love them with Christ-like love.

In John 15:13, Jesus talked about laying one’s life down for another person. This does not mean that we must die on a cross for someone. Rather, we must not allow some self-sacrifice to stop us from loving people.

We all have people around us who are tough to show kindness and generosity. To love these people, it takes the sacrifice of our time and, at times, our money to truly show them love. To truly accomplish this kind of love for the people around us, we must constantly remind ourselves of how Jesus loves us.

Most of us do not need convincing of the many reasons God could use to conclude that we are unworthy of His love. Nor is it hard to be grateful that Jesus laid down His life so that God can forgive us and we can be on our way to Heaven.

Remembering these things helps us pass on love to those around us.

Father, I am so grateful for Your plan of salvation and the unmerited favors that You have given to me. Help me to quickly offer love to others. In Jesus’s Name, amen.
