The Magi’s Reasons to Worship
They Saw His Star!
Scripture Reading: Psalm 66:1-4
Key Verse: Matthew 2:1-2
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.”
This month we will be looking at reasons to worship. There are good and right reasons to worship. There are wrong reasons to worship as well. The Bible describes both and points us toward the right reasons, God-centered reasons.
The Magi, as they followed the star that had appeared, are examples of the right reasons. Let’s look at a few of the reasons why they did it right. First, they had been studying their scriptures. These Magi (commonly known as wise men) had been seeking truth and knowledge. They were wise enough to know that they needed to be life-long students. The New Testament reminds us that God rewards those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). Authentic worship flows out of hearts that truly seek to know God better. The Magi had been serious students of the Old Testament scriptures. They had studied passages such as Numbers 24:17: “I see Him, but not now; I behold Him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel.” Because of their knowledge of the scriptures, they were rewarded with finding the “King of the Jews” and the privilege of being some of the first to worship Him.
As we study God’s Word, worship will result. As we read about God, our hearts will be drawn to God. Worship is the overflow of a heart filled with thoughts of God.
Father, the more I know about you, the more I want to worship you! In Jesus Name I pray, Amen.
