Suitable and Powerful – Part 1

Scripture Reading: Genesis 2:18-25

Key Verse: Genesis 2:18b

“It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

God said, “I will make a helper suitable for him.” The Hebrew word that we translate for “helper” is “ezer.” It is only used in the Old Testament and is always in the context of important and powerful assistance. There is not even a hint of subordination of the woman, but rather a position of great importance.

There is no doubt that modern minds have diminished the original meaning and intent of God’s design. His prize creation, man and woman, were of equal importance, each having their own unique gifts to give to the marriage. The idea that one is more important than the other was never part of the Divine design.

  1. David Freedman, quoted by New Life website, explains that the Hebrew word “ezer” is a combination of two roots, resulting in the meaning: to rescue, to save; strength. God designed a person to rescue Adam from a life of loneliness. She was created to save Adam from having to do life without assistance. Eve was a “strength” that would complete Adam.

Let’s work hard to clear our thinking of preconceived ideas of marriage. We want to understand God’s original idea of what man and woman would look like as they did life together. As we do, we will find there is no insult to either partner in marriage.

Father, thank you for your perfect plan for marriage. Help me to live it out today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
