But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

Listen to how Webster defines the word “distract”: “draw attention away from.” This assumes that someone had chosen a place to put their attention, and someone or something had “drawn” their attention away from it!

When we choose God’s way, we will be confronted with many distractions! This world has more options than ever before; things that will draw us away from the attention we pledged to God. To get distracted from our commitments to reading God’s Word, praying daily, or sharing in worship with other believers, is a common tool of the evil one. Very few blatantly say: “I quit, I’m not reading or praying or going to church. I’m done.” Most people don’t consciously make those decisions. Most, when they go that way, do so because of daily distractions that draw us away from important things in our life!

In our scripture for today, two sisters had invited Jesus to share a meal and an evening in their home. Martha was a “fretter,” rushing around, getting all the ingredients for the meal. Mary had simply “stopped life” and sat down in front of Jesus to hear His words. Mary knew there was plenty to do but chose not to get distracted from this opportunity to hear Jesus. Martha, understandably, felt Mary left her to do all the work. Martha asked Jesus to correct Mary’s waywardness, but Jesus applauded Mary for choosing the greater things over lesser things. Is God applauding you for your choices?

Father, help me not to get distracted today in my pursuit of you! I want to spend time in your Word and in prayer. Grant me wisdom to let the lesser things, which pop up, go so I can focus on you. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
