Psychologists know that self-talk is one of the most powerful communicators. We are constantly having internal discussions with ourselves. Our brains are constantly processing information and perspectives, many of which are about us. Many people’s opinions and events are collected over years and help develop our self-talk. Unfortunately, much of this self-talk is not based on truth or facts. We tend to collect dozens of perspectives about ourselves and these form our self-esteem. That’s not all bad if we’ve grown up in a healthy environment. Unfortunately, many have had far too many negative impressions that have developed a very poor self-image!

God wants to step into our lives and correct that part of us. For that to happen, we must be willing to listen to Him and accept His opinion of us! When you catch your thought life negatively evaluating yourself, ask the question: Who is talking? Are those thoughts from your past, pre-Christ? Are those thoughts from your parental influence? Are those thoughts from the evil one? Or, are those thoughts from God?

Gideon took note of who was talking. It was an angel sent from God! That made all the difference, as it should have! The apostle Paul tells us to take “captive every thought.” In other words, don’t allow your self-talk to rule. Force your mind to consider the Word of God, Bible truths and promises, and allow them to form your opinions about yourself!

Father, grant me discernment as I evaluate my self-talk. Please help me reject all other voices but yours! In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
