We can’t earn Salvation, but we want to respond with a determination to please Him!

Pure Christian
Purity Shines Bright – Part 2

Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:1-18

Key Verse: Philippians 2:15

…so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe

As we continue to look at this idea of purity and its witness to our world, let’s look at the “how to’s.”  As we back up to verse 12, we see that purity is about obedience to God all the time!  Purity is pure even when no one is looking!  If we are going to shine bright for God, we must realize that it will come from living out that purity all the time.  Those who work hard to look good in public but cut corners when no one is looking soon are “outed” for who they really are!

The later part of verse 12 tells us to “work out our salvation with fear and trembling.”  The Amplified Translation of this verse elaborates on its meaning: “self-destruct, with serious caution, tenderness of conscience, watchfulness against temptation, timidly shrinking from whatever might offend God and discredit the name of Christ.”  I think it’s clear that we walk with God each day with a deep desire to walk worthy of His grace!  We clearly understand that we can’t earn it, but we want to respond with a determination to please Him!

Finally, it’s good news to read in verse 13 that it is God who works in us to “will and to act according to His good purpose.”  Purity comes as a result of God’s gracious work and our response of obedience!

Father, I want to be pure and let that speak as my witness to those around me!  Do your good work in me and I will obey your Spirit in me.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
