Stumbling Blocks – Part 2

Scripture Reading:  2 Corinthians 6:4-13

We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited.

After verse three, our printed key verse for yesterday and today’s devotional, the apostle begins to explain in detail the principle of the stumbling block.  In verse four he states that “as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way…”  That wording is a little hard to understand.  The word “commending,” sunistao in the Greek language, means to put together by way of combination, to teach by comparison.  In other words, Paul is reminding us that there are a couple of ways to influence those around us.  The first way is verbal teaching; a more formal way to lead and influence people who are watching.  The second way to influence is to model truths in our lifestyle.

            The apostle uses the examples of great endurance in troubles, hardships and distress.  Paul felt that the way he handled these negative factors in his life would positively influence those that watched him handle them.  Would that be true for you?  When negative circumstances hit your life, what do others see in your reactions?  Will your children, co-workers, and neighbors see a reaction that will make them want more of Jesus?  Or will those watching wonder what happened to Jesus in you?  Stumbling blocks are those things in our lives, whether it’s words we say or our reactions to circumstances that negatively influence the people who are watching!

Father, with your help, I am determined to be a positive leader.  Help me to rid my life of all stumbling blocks.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
