Our Nature – Part 1

Scripture Reading; Ephesians 2:1-7

Key Verse: Ephesians 2:3c

By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.

We are studying the definition of the word transformation. The first word we looked at in its definition was “condition.” The second word that we want to look at today is “nature.” Transformation affects the nature of an object or person. When we apply this to the biblical content, our very natures are changed.

What was our nature like before Jesus transformed us by His Divine power? Our key verse reminds us that our nature once subjected us to God’s anger. In verse three of today’s reading, we read a summary of every person’s nature before Jesus: “All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature.” Please take note of the word “inclination” because it will be a key focus of the transformation that God does in us when we put our faith in Jesus. Before Jesus we have natures that are inclined to serve the flesh; all our sinful cravings. Look at the definition of the word inclination: “a person’s natural tendency or urge to act or feel in a particular way.”

We desperately need a transformation if we are going to live lives that please God. We are born with a nature that is inclined to serve self above God; to please our sinful desires rather than the desires of God. It is only through Jesus that we can have our nature transformed. (Continued)
