Scripture Reading: Acts 12:20-25

Key Verse: Acts 12:23
Instantly, an angel of the Lord struck Herod with a sickness, because he accepted the people’s worship instead of giving the glory to God. So, he was consumed with worms and died.

Today’s Scripture Reading is short but has great lessons.

King Herod, of the Roman empire, was making a speech and the people responded loudly:

The people gave him a great ovation, shouting, “It’s the voice of a god, not of a man!” (Acts 12:22)

The King received the people’s approval and liked the fact that they called him a god. However, our Key Verse tells us that instantly the Lord struck him with sickness for not giving God the glory. King Herod died a horrible death. Herod was not a God-fearing man, but the Bible tells us that all the rulers, kings, presidents, and leaders of the world’s nations are under God’s authority:

Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. (Romans 13:1)

Romans 13:1 gives people a little heartburn because we think of leaders like Hitler or Putin, and we wonder: did God really put these leaders in place? The answer is yes, but that obviously does not mean all leaders are godly. It does mean they are servants of the most high God. Leaders seldom admit or even know this, but they are under God’s authority and God will hold them accountable for their actions. Government leaders will answer for their refusal to recognize God and their evil actions as they stand before God’s judgement seat. It may not happen as quickly as it did for Herod, but God’s wrath will catch up with them.

There is a lesson for all of us in this story, not just the leaders of nations.

When people praise us for good things that we accomplish, remember to give God the glory. As Christ-followers, realize that the money we make and the things we accomplish are all blessings that flow from our Father in Heaven:

Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. (James 1:17NLT)

When someone compliments us for an accomplishment, remember to say something like, “Thank you, and I give God credit for all His help in my life.” If we forget, or don’t say it exactly right, our Father understands our humanness.

Give God the glory!

Father, I want to praise You for all the good gifts You have granted me since I put my faith in Jesus. Holy Spirit remind me to give God all the glory! In Jesus’s Name I pray, amen.
