Do Not Be Unequally Yoked – Part II

Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 6:14-18

Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 6:14
Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?

God’s Word Translation of the Bible gives another perspective on our Key Verse:

Stop forming inappropriate relationships with unbelievers. Can right and wrong be partners? Can light have anything in common with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14 (GW)

This verse pertains to relationships that have a high commitment level, such as marriage. When we get into a relationship with an unbeliever that has a high level of commitment, our relationship with God can be challenging.

Once you have made a commitment to an unbeliever, whether it is marriage or business, there comes a time when your allegiance to God undoubtedly becomes a challenge. You must comprise your commitment to your partner or your commitment to God. This is not a good situation. The Bible tells us:

Just say a simple, “Yes, I will,” or “No, I won’t.” Anything beyond this is from the evil one. (Matthew 5:37 NLT)

When a believer tells an unbeliever “Yes I will” but then later says “No, I will not because of my love for Jesus”, that makes a poor witness as a Christian.

Sometimes these relationships happen before either one of the partners becomes a follower of Christ. The Bible does not tell us to break up these relationships, because the new believer can influence the unbeliever.

I have talked to people who wanted to marry an unbeliever. They usually assure me that they will be an influence on that person. Our Key Verse is a warning for that believer not to go into that relationship because there are no guarantees that the unbeliever will ever say “yes” to Jesus.

If a believer ignores our Key Verse and goes ahead, they commit a sin. God certainly forgives this sin, but it is dangerous to knowingly commit a sin saying “I’ll get forgiveness afterwards”. The Apostle Paul warns:

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. (Galatians 6:7-8)

Can you see from this verse that people who knowingly sin while saying to themselves “I’ll ask for forgiveness afterwards” is mocking God and His goodness?

Father, help me to never form a relationship with anyone that might cause me to compromise my relationship with You. I ask this in Jesus’s Name, amen.
