Scripture Reading: Romans 12:14-21
Key Verse: Romans 12:19
Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.
God wants His children to live abundant lives that are effective in dealing with all life’s issues. When he sees that we are using ineffective methods in dealing with life, God’s Spirit intercedes to remind us of better ways to handle them. Anger is one of the best examples of the ineffective methods of handling most, not all, of our life issues. Certainly some situations call for the righteous anger of godly people. But most of the time our anger comes out because we don’t know or don’t care to use God’s more effective methods.
Assuming you want to be a more effective person in dealing with your spouse, children, co-workers, and boss, let me offer some Biblical methods of handling the anger that creeps up in these relationships. First, our scripture for today directs us to never take revenge – that is inappropriate and ineffective. Revenge is inappropriate for God’s holy people and it’s ineffective because it takes God out of the equation. The apostle Paul tells us to “leave room” for God to work. Revenge of any kind robs God of the “room” He needs to work for us!
If you read the additional reading section, you’ll find a second help for effective living… blessing those who hurt you. Being proactive in our walk with God, not just reactive, is a very effective method for our life issues. When you feel your anger emotion rising, go do something kind. You’ll be amazed at the power of that act. Practice God’s Word and you will become a highly effective person!
Father, thank you for your instructions. I believe they are not only right, but effective. Grant me strength not to return to the worldly ways of thinking. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
