Teach Us to Pray

Jesus taught us to say “hallowed”; hear it with our own ears, meditate on its meaning!

Prayer Establishes Our Reverence for God
Take Note of Our Days

Scripture Reading: Psalm 90:1-2

Key Verse: Psalm 90:12

Teach us to number our days aright,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Hallowed is God’s name. Jesus taught us to say it, hear it with our own ears, and meditate on its meaning! In our scripture for today, the Psalmist David reminds us to “number our days aright.” In other words, take note of how we are living out our days. Are we living in reverence to a holy God? Are we working out our salvation with “fear and trembling” as the Apostle Paul taught in Philippians 2:12?

Our view of God is critical to our attitude and ultimate actions in this life. All of us need daily reminders of God’s fatherly love, as well as His mind-boggling rightness! David wrote, in our additional reading section for today, that “before the mountains were born” or the earth was “brought forth” He was God. From “everlasting to everlasting” He existed. It is no wonder David’s heart was continually full of worship and praise.

It is so easy to make ourselves the center of our universe! Even as Christ followers, we can turn too much of our prayers over to self-interest. The model prayer was given, in my opinion, to fight that tendency. If you have ever tried to develop a friendship with someone who was consumed with their own needs or problems, you know how difficult it was to get that friendship to a healthy and desirable level! The popular chorus we often sing is: “I am a friend of God.” Let’s determine to be a good friend by focusing some of our daily prayers on Him! After saying “Hallowed is your name,” spend a few moments meditating on His holy majesty!

Father, you are a holy God, Creator of the universe, one who always was and ever will be! I fall before you, grateful to call you my God. In Jesus’ Name I pray, amen.
