Teach Us to Pray - July 2019

Our strength alone is no match for the strength of the evil forces working in and around us

Prayer Establishes Our Refuge in God
Deliver Me from Evil

Scripture Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

Key Verse: Matthew 6:13

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’

We believe that Jesus Christ was all God and all man. He experienced both the Divine and humanity fully! Thus, we believe He could clearly see the physical world and the unseen world. He interacted with flesh and blood. He also interacted with angels and evil spirits. When Jesus taught us to pray, he carefully crafted a prayer to deal with both worlds.

Today we begin the seven-day journey of understanding how to deal with the forces of the unseen world. We need help—desperately. Our strength alone is no match for the strength of the evil forces working in and around us. When we come to this portion of the model prayer, we ought to take it very seriously. We must avoid the tendency to “sing-song” this model prayer without sincere thought! Jesus gave it as a critical aspect of our spiritual victory. Don’t take it lightly!

This section makes a request to our Father in heaven. It asks for His divine help in dealing with the temptations that are bound to come our way. If Jesus didn’t believe this was a normal part of life, He would not have included this section in the prayer. The request to “lead us away from temptation” is not an assumption that we’ll never face temptation. Rather, it tells us it is possible to avoid many temptations that are in the world. We can request, of our Father, that we could avoid many of the attacks of the evil one. Let’s ask!

Father, filter out the sneaky attacks of the evil one today. Grant me a joy-filled day. If I must be tested, grant me your strength for those hours! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
