True righteousness is not man-made or available outside of the gracious hand of God

Growing Our Harmony – Part 2
Facts about the Filling

Scripture Reading: Philippians 3:8-9

Key Verse: Philippians 3:8

What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ

Yesterday we learned that there is a filling available to us. It takes away the emptiness of our hearts and fills us with righteousness! Today, I want to share some facts about this wonderful filling.

First fact: It comes from God. The righteousness is not man-made or available outside of the gracious hand of God. It is much like a robe that we put on to cover us and warm us. The Old Testament prophet Isaiah said it best: Isaiah 61:10 – I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest,

and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

Second fact: Our faith is the key to our filling. The Apostle Paul is very careful to clear up any human attempts at earning this “right standing” with God: “not having a righteousness of my own.” Faith (trust) in God is what pleases Him and brings this filling to us. Hebrews 11:6 reminds us that it is literally “impossible to please God” without faith! The kind of faith we are talking about today is not a faith that is asking God for a favor. The faith that brings the filling is a faith that says: “I believe in God so much that I will follow Him every day.” It’s a belief in God’s wisdom; a belief in His ability to see into our future; a belief that states that God works for our good! This faith leads us to “hunger and thirst for His righteousness”! This is no academic “ought to.” It’s a deep craving to have all of God in all of me! When anyone gets to this point in their life and has this kind of faith, watch out – the filling is on the way!

Father, keep me full of your righteousness as I keep my faith on you! In Jesus’ name, amen.
