Divine Design for Life

The Bible is all God-breathed and obedience to its concepts brings blessings I want in my life!

Money Matters
We Should Tithe

Scripture Reading: Malachi 3:8-10

Key Verse: Matthew 23:23

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices–mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law–justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.

I understand, though I don’t agree with, Christ followers who say that the New Testament doesn’t teach tithing. There are not many scriptures to turn to in the New Testament that say: You should tithe. So, I guess the issue will be how many times would the Son of God need to say something before you would agree to obey? In today’s key verse scripture, Jesus is challenging the Pharisees to increase their level of justice, mercy, and faithfulness. He even pokes a little fun at their diligence in giving a tenth yet overlooking the bigger issues that we just mentioned. Had Jesus left it at that, I might agree that Jesus’ teachings separate us from tithing. But, as you can read, Jesus carefully adds: You should practice the latter (meaning tithe), without neglecting the former (justice, mercy and faithfulness).

This practice of tithing was so built into the system that most in the early church assumed it for their spiritual disciplines. To ignore it leaves us with no standard to compare ourselves. Each person would have to say of themselves: “I am a generous giver.” Who could dispute that statement once we throw out God’s standards?

Jesus said it once. Is that enough for you? It is enough for me. I have decided to take the Bible as a whole, not two halves. It is all God-breathed and obedience to its concepts of truth brings blessings I want in my life!

Father, open my eyes to the truths that will bless me and guide me. Give me wisdom not to pick and choose the truths that I might want to ignore! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
