Everyone needs a mentor relationship; it really is indispensable

A Mentor Relationship
Biblical Mentoring – Part 2

Scripture Reading:  2 Timothy 1:1-7

Key Verse: 2 Timothy 1:2-3

To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.

In yesterday’s and today’s scripture, we read of a mentoring relationship.  The Apostle Paul is mentoring young Timothy.  Like all young believers, Timothy’s heart was right, but he needed to learn how to fulfill the purpose for which God called him.  The Apostle Paul spends a lot of time with him, pouring into Timothy the wisdom he has learned over the years.  Both men were enriched by the relationship.  The Apostle Paul’s heart was obviously moved with deep feelings of friendship for Timothy.  He called him his “dear son.”  Timothy was able to grow an effective ministry because of his relationship with Paul.

Have you ever been in a formal mentoring relationship?  I say formal because all of us have mentored and all of us have been mentored.  These informal relationships started when our parents mentored us.  The dictionary says that a mentor is a trusted advisor, guide, and teacher!  Those who have never had consistently trusted mentoring—with biblical principles—end up in trouble in our society.  Everyone needs this kind of relationship; it really is indispensible.  If you don’t have a mentor that came naturally into your life, seek one out.  God will help you find a mentor.

Father, guide me into relationships that will give me positive and biblical input for my daily living.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
