Parents must pass on to their children the values and commands of God

The Parental Handoff – Part 1

Scripture Reading: Deuteronomy 4:1-10

Key Verse: Deuteronomy 4:9

Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.

Anyone who watches track and field events understands a relay race.  The four runners on each team run their section and then hand a baton off to the next runner.  The exchange of the baton is a critical part of the race.  If a runner drops the baton during the exchange, it almost guarantees that team will not win.  The runners practice the handoff of the baton over and over.  They know how critical it is to get this right!

Parents have been given the responsibility to pass on to their children the values and commands of God.  The passing of this baton is critical to the future of a strong church in God’s kingdom.  Some parents take this responsibility seriously and carefully practice passing the baton.  Unfortunately, far too many parents don’t understand the basic essentials of this “relay race.”  These parents don’t understand their role to give their children the proper perspectives for living.  These parents have a catchall phrase that helps them justify their irresponsibility: “I don’t want to cram religion down my children’s throats.”

God expects parents to hand off what they know to their children.  God does not call this “cramming it down their throats.”  He calls it good parenting.  This week we will discuss the details of God’s plan.  Let’s commit ourselves to follow God’s plan!  (Continued)

Father, I trust your ways and will do my part to help my children to trust you as well.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
