Divorce – Part 1

Scripture Reading: Matthew 19:6-9

Key Verse: Matthew 19:9

I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

After the first three devotionals for this month, there is an “elephant in the room.”  What about divorce?  Jesus’ words are not hard to understand, but for our society, hard to live with: “And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery” (Matthew 19:9).

First fact: God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16).  When we do something that a friend has said he hates, isn’t that hurting the friendship?  How do you think God feels when people easily select divorce as an option?

Second fact: God hates sexual immorality (1 Corinthians 10:8).  If God makes one exception for divorce, which He hates, we know how serious sexual immorality is to Him.  When a spouse is involved in sexual sins, they betray the marriage covenant in God’s eyes.  Though it is not commanded, Jesus did allow for divorce when sexual sin is involved.  Many couples work through infidelity and hold fast to their marriage.  I believe God is pleased with that decision.

Third fact: God forgives all sin when we ask!  You may have divorced without any sexual unfaithfulness being involved.  You may have then remarried, which Jesus said was adultery.  However, this sin can be confessed and you can be forgiven.  Like all sin, we must take it seriously and determine to not repeat those sins again!

Father, thank you for your guidance for our lives and our marriages.  I receive them and will live by them.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
