God Commands Repentance

Scripture Reading: Acts 17:29-31

Key Verse: Acts 17:30

In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.

The story that is being told in our scripture reading for today started in verse 16: “While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols.”  The Apostle Paul headed for the local church, called a synagogue at that time, and tried to teach his message of Jesus.  These idols that the people in Athens were worshipping were made of gold, silver or stone.

The heart of Paul’s message is found in our printed key verse for today “In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now He commands all people everywhere to repent.”  Why did God overlook such ignorance in the past?  Because God had not sent them the powerful revelations of truth that Jesus was when He came to earth as a man.  After this gracious act of God, people everywhere have no excuse.  Jesus came and presented the true and living God in flesh and blood.  People could no longer claim they couldn’t understand who the true God was.

God commands people everywhere to repent.  That means you and me!  Have you repented?  Changed your thinking about your lifestyle?  Are you making changes as God reveals those things that are not pleasing to Him?  Remember, if you continue to cherish sin in your heart, God is not going to hear your prayers (Psalm 66:18).

Father, I don’t want to cherish anything that displeases you!  I give you permission to correct my thinking on any issues!  In Jesus’ name, amen.
