Thinking Right When Things Go Wrong

Bad things that happen to us are but mild disappointments when we truly understand the God we serve

Things Gone Wrong Can Be Good
It Was God After All

Scripture Reading: Genesis 45:1-6

Key Verse: Genesis 45:7
But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.

Bad things can end up being good things if God is behind it. Today’s Scripture Reading tells of God’s behind the scenes work in Joseph’s life!

Joseph had a lot of bad things happen to him. His brothers sold him into slavery, and the slavers put him in shackles like a common criminal.

Then, after a taste of success and comfort, Pharaoh’s wife falsely accused him. That false accusation landed him in a prison cell. Some fellow prisoners said they would remember Joseph when they got out of prison and speak to the king; but, they forgot about him.

Yes, Joseph had a lot of things go wrong in his young life. In today’s Key Verse we read that he understood an all-important principle of a “God-fearing” life: things gone wrong can be good.

In other words, God can be behind it all, working a plan and purpose that blesses us and others. In fact, as Joseph said, God can work bad things into good things that “save your lives by a great deliverance.”

For Christ-followers, the bad things that happen around us are but mild disappointments when we truly understand the God we serve. Yes, we are disappointed that life is hard, hurtful, and cut short at times. But when we remember we serve a mighty God who works in and through all things for our good, we can accept the worst of life with peaceful surrender!

Because God is working behind the scenes of our lives, we can trust Him for good things to come!

Father, help me in my disappointments never to accuse You falsely or even complain too loudly! I want to trust Your hand even when I do not see the plan! In Jesus’s Name, amen.
