Let Peace Rule – Part 3
Scripture Reading: Colossians 3:15-21
Key Verse: Colossians 3:15
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.
Yesterday’s devotional started describing the Godly Parenting System (GPS) with an acrostic of the word peace. The letter “C” stands for “connect.” As a parent, are you connecting with your children or simply telling them what to do or not to do? Are you around them enough to know what they really enjoy doing? Do you make any efforts to understand their interests and join in if possible? Trying to parent without developing a solid relationship feels more like a dictatorship than a home. As we see on the news, wherever there is a dictatorship, there usually comes rebellion! Parents tend to spend far more time thinking about how to correct bad behavior than how to connect in a good relationship!
The final “E” of peace stands for “exhibit.” Are you exhibiting the kind of behavior you want your children to live out? Most kids, when they get angry, react in ways that are inappropriate. Do you? Do you keep your cool even when you feel frustrated by their behavior? I’m sure the honest truth is, “Not all the time.” Nobody will be perfect in this area, but don’t give yourself permission to lose it when the kids act up. Be firm, but stay calm—stay “adult.” Do your best to exhibit the actions and reactions that you want your kids to model. Get in front of your kids and lead!
Father, I want my home to be peaceful. Help me to parent with your methods. Grant me wisdom to keep my peace, even when I discipline. In Jesus’ name, amen.
