Teach Us to Pray - July 2019

We can pray “deliver me from the evil one” and have the confidence that our Father will help us

Prayer Establishes Our Refuge in God
The Spirit of Truth

Scripture Reading: John 14:18-27

Key Verse: John 14:16-17

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever– the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

When Jesus taught us to pray “deliver us from evil,” He knew all the methods the evil one would use to try to defeat us. One of the methods is simply to mix lies with a splattering of truth. A classic method of the evil one is to get us thinking or doing things that aren’t founded on all truth. Look around today and listen to people talk about God. Most of time, this talk of God is not blatant lies. Usually people speak of spiritual things with partial understanding.

Our scripture for today comes to our aid in these attacks of the evil one. God sends the Holy Spirit to those of us who believe. He lives with us and in us. His work is to lead us into all truth. Our job is to discern His voice, over all the other voices of this world. If we will hear and follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we will avoid operating on half-truths.

Note where Jesus started this teaching: “If you love me, you will obey what I command” (John 14:15). Asking Jesus into our lives should not be done without a clear picture of what is expected. To love Jesus is to truly believe He is right and worthy to be followed! The Spirit will be our counselor and reminder (John 14:26), but we must determine in our hearts to be obedient to all revealed truths!

We can pray “deliver me from the evil one” and have the confidence that our Father will send the Holy Spirit to help us navigate the devil’s landmines, set for our destruction. Let’s keep listening!

Father, with your Spirit in me, I will walk today in wisdom and purity. If you will show me the way, I will follow. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
