The Rib

Scripture Reading: Genesis 2:22-24

Key Verse: Genesis 2:22

Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

It is noteworthy that God choose the rib of man to start His creation of the woman. God could have picked many other options. Was it by mere accident or random selection that the rib was chosen? We believers know that God never does anything that isn’t perfectly planned and has great purpose!

Out of the side of man came the woman—one who would walk side by side through this life. This very imagery destroys any thought of a woman having less importance. God wanted man and woman to be of equal importance; both giving different passions and strengths to the relationship. What wisdom God has to know how much better life will go when both husband and wife see each other as equal partners with differing roles.

Man was made out of the dust, but woman was made from a refined dust that had been formed into a rib; bone of his bones. She was “built” as with a home, the foundation of the relationship. Yes, their roles in life will be different, just like they were created differently. However, God found her “good” just like He did when He created man. Both man and woman were God’s prized creation, made just a little lower than the angels (Hebrews 2:7). May we never degrade our spouse, but rather honor them as God’s special creation.

Father, forgive me when I don’t see my spouse as you do. Grant me your eyes of love and honor. In Jesus’ name, amen.
