God hates lying… do we allow our tongues to deceive and tell half-truths or spin false stories?

God Hates What?
Lying Tongue

Scripture Reading: Proverbs 6:16-19, Philippians 2:1-11

Key Verses: Proverbs 6:19, Philippians 2:8

A lying tongue, well that’s fantastic. God hates lying. Make that 0-2. This seems like such an obvious one, yet how often in our own lives do we allow our tongues to deceive and tell half-truths or spin false stories? Scripture makes it very clear that our tongue has great power. It can build someone up, encourage, provide hope, or it can be wielded to destroy and tear down. Our God is a God of truth, when we lie, we distort the very nature of who God is in our lives. As followers of Jesus Christ, our words, and how we choose to use them, are of the utmost importance. How are you using your tongue? Is it building people up, encouraging, providing hope? Or does it distort the truth, tear down, destroy? Philippians 2:11 provides the true function of our tongues which is to, “acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Lord, forgive me when I use my tongue in any other way than to acknowledge who you are in my life. Forgive me when I distort truth. “May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing to you oh Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14). Amen.
