The Salve for Suffering
At Home with the Lord
Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:1-10
Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 5:8
Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord.
The Apostle Paul testified, in our scripture passage for today, that he would prefer to be absent from his present body and present with the Lord. His faith was so strong that he could see by faith how great life would be if he could go be with the Lord. Paul said he would be at home with the Lord. This was a statement of his peace and comfort with the next world.
Are you feeling comfortable with thoughts of the next world? God wants us to be comfortable in His presence. I believe God is pleased when we try to imagine the beauty and joy of our final home. In fact, we should grow more comfortable with our heavenly home than this present world. This world is not our home; we are just traveling through.
I’m sure we’ve all heard the saying: “no matter how good the vacation, it’s good to be home.” We should say things like that when we think of the new earth that God is planning for us. This world is OK for now, but it will be good to get home! For believers, this is not some morbid death wish; it is a confident statement of faith in God’s plans for our eternity. This world gives us tears, pain, and various elements of suffering; of course we look forward to our eternal home with the God we serve!
Father, I will stay at peace, even in my times of suffering, for I look forward to being at home with you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
