The second beatitude describes a process in which God gives our spiritual lives a makeover

Beat the Heat
The Results of Mourning

Scripture: Psalm 51:10

Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

People will go through a lot of self-inflicted pain to gain some physical beauty. Watching the TV show “Extreme Makeover” will prove this fact as people go through painful surgeries to achieve a “better look!”

The second beatitude describes a process in which God can give our spiritual lives a makeover. Psalm 51 describes this makeover in terms such as “a pure heart” and a “renewed and steadfast spirit.” Any true Christ follower will read those words and whisper a prayer: “God grant me that kind of makeover!”

What we sometimes don’t remember is there is a process that we must pass through to achieve those desired results. Jesus calls it “mourning,” that deep sense of remorse for an “impure” heart and a “rebellious spirit” before God. Gaining a lifestyle of being healed and healthy can only come to those who get “real” about their spiritual bankruptcy and then mourn over that fact!

David, who had failed God miserably, understood his deep need. In Psalm 51:7 he prayed for God’s cleansing…for God’s “washing.” David did not cling to his authority as king or try to leverage that with God. He fell before God and sought God’s forgiveness and soul cleansing! God answered his prayer and gave a pure heart and a renewed, steadfast spirit in David.

Father, I want to ‘get real’ with you about my sinfulness. It grieves me and I seek your cleansing. Put in me what I cannot put in myself – a steadfast spirit. I pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
